History of the City

The history of Las Vegas, Nevada, is a tale of transformation from a dusty desert outpost to a glittering entertainment capital known worldwide for its casinos, resorts, and vibrant nightlife. From its early Native American inhabitants to its rise as the "Entertainment Capital of the World," Las Vegas's history is marked by innovation, ambition, and a unique blend of cultures.

Early Inhabitants and Spanish Exploration: Long before the arrival of European settlers, the Las Vegas Valley was inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Paiute and Mojave tribes. These Native American communities had lived in the region for thousands of years, adapting to the harsh desert environment.

In the 18th century, Spanish explorers and missionaries ventured into the area, including the famed Antonio Armijo expedition, which established the Old Spanish Trail trade route that passed through the Las Vegas Valley. Spanish influence in the region was relatively limited, and the area remained sparsely populated.

American Westward Expansion: The mid-19th century saw the United States expand westward, and the Las Vegas Valley became a waystation for travelers on the Mormon Pioneer and California Trails. In 1855, Mormon missionaries established a fort along Las Vegas Creek, providing essential supplies and rest for those heading to California.

The Railroad and Founding of Las Vegas: The true catalyst for Las Vegas's development was the arrival of the railroad. In 1905, the San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake Railroad (later part of the Union Pacific) chose Las Vegas as a division point and auctioned off land in the area. The city of Las Vegas was officially founded on May 15, 1905. The railroad brought both passengers and freight, spurring economic growth.

Prohibition and the Birth of Entertainment: During the Prohibition era (1920-1933), Las Vegas became known for its speakeasies and illicit activities. The legalization of gambling in Nevada in 1931 marked a significant turning point. The Northern Club, one of the city's first casinos, opened in 1931, followed by the El Rancho Vegas in 1941, often considered the first resort-style casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Rise of the Las Vegas Strip: The 1940s and 1950s saw a boom in casino development along the Las Vegas Strip, a stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard. Icons like the Flamingo (opened by gangster Bugsy Siegel), the Sahara, and the Sands Hotel solidified Las Vegas as a destination for entertainment and gambling. The Rat Pack, a group of entertainers led by Frank Sinatra, performed regularly in Las Vegas during this era, adding to the city's allure.
